NUMBER THREE
By Dana Lyons
The other night we sat and watched TV
My little girl, my boys, my wife and me
We watched a movie about a pilot in World War Two
My daughter asked, “Daddy, that won’t happen to you?”
Number three and the cargo rides alright
Number three, hope my little girl sleeps tonight
The moon is shining on the Joshua trees below
At ten thousand feet we pass over mountain snow
There are places in the desert where I see no light
It kind of feels like the whole world sleeps tonight
Number three and the cargo rides alright
Number three, seems the whole world sleeps tonight
Ever since I was a kid I wanted to fly
Wanted to move like a bird across the sky
I joined the Air Force and they sent me off to school
Last month I started flying this B-52
Number three and the cargo rides alright
Number three and the desert sleeps tonight
Number three we’ve got missiles showing on our screen
Take your load and move it quickly out to sea
Head for your target and keep the elevation high
We’ll radio when it’s time to let the payload fly
I remember walking through the playground
Three of ours were flying by
My daughter grabbed my hand and asked if those were
Good or bad guys in the sky
She said Daddy don’t let them, Daddy don’t let them
Number three no missiles are in sight
Computer error was the problem here tonight
Number one and number two are heading back this way
Number three can you hear is everything OK?
Number three turn back everything’s alright
Number three turn back, no war tonight
